The Lafarge Aggregate Southeast’s
Lithonia Quarry in the metro Atlanta area
is the oldest operating quarry in Georgia.
Along with age comes some interesting
characteristics. In various areas of the
Lithonia Quarry’s 1,612 acres sit at least
three groves of huge and tranquil bamboo
groves that have been flourishing for
years and years. Most stand at least 60 to
100 feet tall and have the average
diameter of three to five inches.
Few facts are known about the uses of
bamboo, nicknamed “the miracle plant”.
Most southerners think of fishing poles
when bamboo is mentioned. Not actually a
wood, bamboo is a grass – and the fastest
growing plant on the planet. Some
bamboo species can grow more than three
feet in a 24-hour period. Stands of
bamboo release 35% more oxygen than
equivalent stands of trees. Some bamboo
even sequester up to 30 tons of carbon
dioxide from the air per acre.
